A breast implant is a surgical process in which the size of the breasts is artificially enlarged. Breast implants across the world is considered for having a shapely figure. Breast implant is also commonly known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, mammoplasty.
The process involves an incision made either under the breast or around the areola i.e. the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. In some cases incision is made in the armpit. After which a pocket is created for the implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle between the breast and the chest. After the surgery is over, a person may have to wear a special surgical bra and have to avoid vigorous physical activities especially arm movement, physical exercise that involves stretching of chest region. This anyhow is not for a longtime, may be for a month which is recovery time.
Types of breast implants:
Saline implants- Breast augmentation through saline-filled implants were most commonly used in the United States during the 1990's but due to restrictions on silicone implants, they were rarely used in other countries. Though saline implants have proved with excellent results but when compared to silicone gel implants, saline implants were having problems such as rippling, wrinkling, and noticeable to the eye or the touch, particularly for women with very little breast tissue, or for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. For those individuals with more breast tissue saline implants can look similar to silicone gel.
Silicone gel implants- Breast augmentation with silicone implants are generally described in terms of five generations based on characteristics of manufacturing techniques.
First generation implants: These implants are made of a silicone rubber envelope in the shape of sac, filled with a thick, viscous silicone gel with a Dacron patch on the posterior shell. These are firm and will have shape of conical water drop or anatomic "teardrop" shape.
Second Generation Implants-These implants are basically silicone implant inside a saline implant, the double lumen is an attempt to provide the cosmetic benefits of gel in the inside lumen, while the outside lumen containing saline, its volume can be adjusted after placement.
Third & Fourth generation Implants- In these the gel filler reduces possible leakage of the gel as compared to earlier devices. Implants are round and tapered anatomic shapes in these, as anatomic shaped implants are uniformly textured to reduce rotation, while round devices are available in smooth or textured surfaces.
Fifth generation Implants- The earlier devices were having problems due to migration of silicone, with the evolvement of semi-solid gel implants, these implants were put in use as these eliminated possibility of silicone migration. These implant devices have also shown improvements in safety and have been efficient with low rates of capsular contracture and rupture compared to the earlier ones.
The common risk known with breast implants is capsular contracture, a tightening of scar tissue around the implant, which results in varying degrees of breast firmness and may cause pain or changes in the breast's appearance. Other known risks include implant rupture - deflation of a saline-filled implant and temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation. Fear of developing breast cancer is common among those who opt for breast implants. But, it appears that breast implants are neither associated with any large risk of connective tissue disease nor with any increased risk of developing breast cancer.
Breast implant or augmentation has been a choice of many women across the world. Asia is one of the popular destinations for getting breast implants done as high quality and world-standard medical care is available at a very low cost. India, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries in Asia have seen a growth in medical tourist inflow. With high success rate and better sunshine and weather has made people across the globe to come to Asia for getting medical care, not to forget the cost benefits and quality that at par with international standards.
