Traveler Vaccinations

Preparation is vital to travel, especially when you seek to explore unknown foreign destinations. When you plan a trip to any Asiatic destination, it is important to immune yourself from health hazards. Here is a list of vaccines which you could take before visiting an Asian country.

Typhoid

Typhoid bacteria cause life-threatening typhoid fever. There are two types of typhoid vaccine- oral and injection.  The oral is given as a series of doses to be taken at home.  The injection is a single dose to be taken in a clinic.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A virus causes infection to the liver.  It is caused by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water.  One dose of Hepatitis A can provide short term protection. 

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B virus is spread due to unprotected sexual intercourse, needle sharing or mixing of blood products of local residents.  It can cause permanent damage to the liver.  The vaccine is recommended if you are anticipating sexual contact or blood contact with local residents.  The vaccine is given in a series of 2 or 3 doses.   A combination of Hepatitis A and B is also available.

Japanese encephalitis

The vaccine is given to prevent Japanese encephalitis.  The virus causing this disease is spread when bitten by infected mosquitoes.  It is given as a series of 3 doses over a 30-day period.  Not recommended for pregnant women.

Diphtheria
 

Diphtheria causes a thick covering in the back of the throat leading to breathing problems or even paralysis. TD vaccination can prevent diphtheria

  Rabies
vaccination

Recommended for travelers at a risk of animal bite.  However, it does not eliminate need for additional vaccines after animal bite for added protection.

   Polio

Caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated by feces.  If you have not had a one-time booster against polio, you need a dose of Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV)

Influenza

One dose of vaccine is required to prevent influenza. The influenza virus easily spreads from person to person through coughing, sneezing or close face-to-face contact. Sometimes two doses are given to children.

In addition to the vaccines listed above, travelers should also keep themselves updated on vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella and malaria.
